STEAM Lab

Welcome to Steam lab! Weekly I will post what my students are designing and building.

How Steam lab works?
Homeroom teachers will bring their class in every 3 weeks for 45 minutes. When students first arrive, I will spend 5-10 minutes teaching about the challenge. I love to use Microsoft's Sway program to present. I will show a short 2-3 minute video about the challenge or share a read aloud that correlates with the challenge. I will also show real life images about the challenge, i.e. bridges, tower, etc. We then will walk through the engineering design process together. I print large pages that resemble their planning guides.
Engineer Design Process:

  1. Ask: We discuss the problem they need to solve, the materials they can use and the questions they need to answer
  2. Imagine: Students will brainstorm ideas and draw their own idea on a planning guide.
  3. Plan: Student will review every group members plan and devise a group plan.
  4. Create: Once students have a plan, groups will gather the supplies they need and begin building.
  5. Improve: Students will test their plan and improve to make their design work.
As the students are working, I will walk around and motivate students by asking higher level thinking questions and encourage all group members participation.
